Here Are the Signs of Wind Damage—and What To Do Next!
As a roofer here in Mentor, Ohio, repairs are one of the routine services we offer at Raw Roofing Solutions. Of all the reasons why a roof repair may be necessary, wind damage may just be the most common.
While hail is typically thought of as enemy number one when it comes to roof damage, the truth is we see much less hail than extreme wind gusts. The entire area south of Lake Erie is consistently subject to high wind warnings, with gusts commonly exceeding 60 mph—more than enough to damage a roof.
Because wind damage roof repair is so common in our service area, we’re providing a quick guide on spotting wind damage to your roof—and what to do if your roof has been affected by high winds!
Signs You Need a Wind Damage Roof Repair
Wind damage can sometimes be tricky to spot from the ground, and we don’t recommend scaling your roof to survey damage. Even so, here are a few clear signs you can look for after a major wind storm, from a safe vantage point on the ground.
1. Missing or Loose Shingles
If your roof is missing shingles, this is the most obvious sign that your roof has been damaged by high winds. Gusts over 60 mph can damage a roof, and as wind speeds get higher, the more likely it is for wind to tear shingles away from your roof entirely.
Loose shingles are also a common problem following a wind storm. You may notice shingles lying at odd angles or even see shingles flapping in the breeze. This is a clear sign that you need a roof repair.
2. Dented Shingles
In some cases, wind can damage your roof by flinging objects against it. Everything from small stones and sticks to other random debris can be turned into damaging projectiles. Dented shingles will appear to have dark spots. If your roof is made from another material, such as tile, you may even see visible cracks or chips.
3. Dented Siding or Gutters
As damage becomes less obvious, it becomes more difficult to spot from the ground. However, there are other areas you can look at to tell if you have roof damage—besides your roof. When high winds kick up debris, this doesn’t just damage your roof. It can also damage other portions of your home’s exterior, including your siding, windows, gutters, deck, and more. If you spot dents in other portions of your home, your roof may be damaged as well. It’s definitely a good idea to schedule a roof inspection if you notice damage elsewhere!
4. Excessive Granule Loss
For homes with asphalt shingles, the granules along the surface of your shingles play a crucial role in protecting your home. This protective layer of asphalt adds much needed durability to your shingles, and if it becomes worn down, your roof could be vulnerable.
High winds can wear away at this protective layer of asphalt, making granule loss an important sign that you need a wind damage roof repair. How can you spot granule loss? Aside from inspecting your shingles up close, you can also check near downspouts and in your gutters for piles of asphalt. A few granules in your gutters aren’t cause for concern, but significant amounts likely indicate that your roof was damaged.
Schedule an Inspection and Repair Right Away!
If you notice any of these signs of wind damage, it’s important to schedule an inspection and address any needed roof repairs right away. Roof damage, no matter how minor, can leave your roof vulnerable to further problems. For instance, if high winds have loosened shingles, this provides an opportunity for moisture to enter your home, leading to much more expensive repairs down the line. A prompt roof repair is a low-cost way to save money on your roof in the long run.
